Volta Voloshin-Smith is a self taught watercolor artist who specializes in drawing food and snacks. She is the artist behind Color Snack, an art studio that produces color-infused bit of art aimed to feed your soul & inspire creative risks in your sketchbook. Originally from Moldova, she now lives in Dallas, Texas with her husband.
On today’s episode, I chatted with my fellow Cherry Bombe Squad Volta Voloshin-Smith about why it is important to pursue what you love, especially as an immigrant, our everyday creative habits as well as food as a childhood love language. My favorite part is our shared love for sailor moon as well as the discussion about imposter syndrome. It’s an episode packed with food for thoughts, and I can’t wait for you to dive in, let’s go!!
Five Nutty Questions
Who are you, as a snack?
I believe this dessert is called ispahan. It has two pink macarons shells, and in the middle you get raspberries and cream. I think that’s what I would be as a snack, cause it’s pink, it has berries and some cream in it. It’s the perfect combo for me!
Why are you drawing “birds on snacks”?
About 3 years ago, a friend was doing a “birdtober challenge” where she would paint a bird every single day in October. I wanna do it too but I’ve never painted birds before. And I know if there’s no elements of food, I’ll prolly never finish it. So I just randomly decided to put a bird on a snack, and started drawing. To my surprise, people found them very funny and they really liked the collection!
What is your mantra when shit hits the fan?
I do have a mantra, and I actually wrote it on my mirror in the bathroom. It says “I can learn, I can grow.” It’s a reminder for me, that maybe I don’t know everything, but I can learn and I can grow, so I can figure this out one way or another.
Any plans for your last meal?
I would say it would have to be some kind of colorful pastry dessert, prolly with strawberries, cause I love strawberries. Something with the texture of a little bit crunchy, maybe also with somewhat citrusy and tartness. I love that combo, but it also needs to be sweet. Overall, I love all kinds of food, I don’t want to pick just one!
Tell me something nuts!
I found two partners to work with me to create a mobile APP for my artwork! I don’t know anything about APP development, but I just had this idea and I was really passionate about it. And I think it’s total nuts that two complete strangers were referred to me, and they were like this is great, we can make it happen! OMG!
That’s a wrap, Honey!
